Errortype:11 stormed onto the LongIsland/NYC scene in 1997, with former members of Mind Over Matter, Clockwise, and Bad Trip in their ranks. With a sound that doesn't really fit in with what hardcore kids have come to expect at their shows, it's been an uphill battle for these guys to win over people in the hardcore scene while trying to reach out to other audiences as well. Errortype:11 is doing a damn good job though, by making some amazing music and playing with a lot of different bands indifferent styles and shows and winning over a few people everytime. With their second full length about to come out on Some Records, we talked to front man Artie Shepard about what's instore for Errortype:11. This interview was done in Bayshore Long Island, where Errortype was playing a show with Snapcase, Glassjaw,Buried Alive, and Good Clean Fun. It was Artie's Birthday and we really appreciate his taking the time to talk to us. Artie is a really straight up guy, and so some of the things he says in this interview might upset some of the kids in the hardcore scene, but as they say, "Sometimes the truth hurts."

Paul: I feel like I've been drunk for like 10 hours and I haven't drank a damn thing. I don't know what the hell's going on. I think somebody caught me pretty good during Buried Alive.

Artie: During Buried Alive? That's pretty metal.

Paul: That is pretty metal. Hmmm ok questions.

Artie: Questions help. We can just hang out and talk...You got any problems?

Paul: Problems? yeah.... I gotta lay down. Gerrett you gotta move.

Gerrett: ...So your new CD's coming out?

Artie: Yeah, January 11th which is a couple of days away...two weeks, something like that.

Paul: How'd you guys get hooked up with Some?

Artie: Well, I played with Walter for two years World's Fastest Car, so that was like.. when we did the demo, Some was really the only label we even gave it to. I mean we had all these people like "Yeah!" and everything, like Rev and labels like that, but we gave it to Some and they wanted to do one off and thats really what I wanted because if we signed to a bigger indie, we'd have to do two or three records and that kinda sucks. Our real major goal is to go to a major label anyway, so really from the beginning we were always shooting over where we were and to not have any contractual ties was really a good way of going about that.

Paul:You guys all came from a lot of different styles of bands, and none of them really sounded like this. Did you guys all just decide to do something different? or...

Artie: Well, it was kinda like my deal. Well Phil and I really. Phil was actually the one who approached me about the band and about playing together. I had pretty much written off playing in bands completely, but Phil came over one day, and I liked Phil, I knew him for a while...he's kind of a freak, but you know thats Phil, ...and I mean so am I so we kinda fit together and umm he played me some shit he wrote, I played him some shit I wrote, and we wrote a bunch of songs that day. So we went downstairs and we started playing, and one of the songs, which is the last song on our record "I Hope All Your Dreams Come True," and Eric, I live in Eric the drummer's house, and he came down and started playing, and that was how it was kinda born. Scott joined the next day. Later to QUIT, but... we just kind of all fell together, the timing was good and there was no real direction, that's the thing about Errortype:11, like we do acoustic songs, we do pop songs, we do sort of heavier songs, whatever is good, is good. You write a song, everybody's into it, and that's kind of the way it goes. No rules.

Paul: Now you guys playing tonight, you're playing with like Buried Alive, and your next show is with Indecision, and...

Artie: Yeah! I forgot to tell the band about that they're gonna be pissed...

(Everyone laughs)Paul: How do you feel about playing...

Artie: You know, Artie Phillie is one of my oldest and dearest friends that's really the only reason I would play that show. I mean THIS show is even weird for us to play. I playing it, again, because like glassjaw, snapcase...I've known Daryl for-fuckin-ever man, like he played..Snapcase on their first tour played with Bad Trip so I met him then, and he comes to all our shows in Buffalo. Like we'll be playing in a basement in front of 50 people, and there's Daryl and that's fuckin' WAY cool. Those guys are all really really cool guys and apparantly they have some list of bands that they wanna play with, and we were on that list, so Christian (promoter) called me and was like yo you wanna play, and I was like yeah whatever so....plus you can never really say no to playing a show in front of that many people.

Paul: Yeah there's a LOT of people here tonight.
<---Back

Artie: Yeah plus at Indecision there will be a lot of people too. Granted, they're metal kids, they're hard to win over, but you know we win over a few of them every time. Just because we're not metal, doesn't mean we're not good. You know, just sit back and listen, don't mosh.

Gerrett: Seemed like you got a pretty good reaction tonight.

Artie: We sold a fuckin' BOAT LOAD of shit. I was real surprised. When we first set up the merch table people were just walking by, like's who's that? You know, because we haven't played on Long Island in like a year. But then, after we played it was just a rush on the stuff, so that's why we play live. That's why we're good live.

Gerrett: I'm in Florida, and people know you down there, like your stuff is in the stores...

Artie: we do REALLY well in Florida. Gainesville is like our second home. Whenever we're in Florida we stay in Gainesville and just go to each show from there.

Paul: Did you play the Gainesville Fest?

Artie: Yeah we did. That was really cool. Like whenever I'm down in Gainesville it's really cool, because I always feel like I'm a part of something. Like I'm older than everybody else in the scene, and the last time I really felt like I was a part of something was when Mind Over Matter was together and we like first started the scene. Like there really was nothing going on and George and I, and Artie Phillie kinda started the scene on Long Island, and that was the last time I felt like I was really a part of something. When I'm with Hot Water Music, I really feel like I'm part of something. They're REALLY amazing guys.

Gerrett: Yeah, I saw them for the first time a couple of weeks ago in Jacksonville and they were just amazing.

Artie: Oh really? For the first time?..You never saw them during the bad days. You gotta see them during the bad days to compare. That shit happened really quick. Like we toured with them and Grade last year, and it was before they "broke up," and there was only like 40 people at the shows, and they broke up in Europe and they come back and all of a sudden it's like there's 600 people at every show. And it's like where the fuck were all you people before?? It was the strangest thing. We're thinking of breaking up too just for that.

Paul: Are you guys on tour now? Or taking shows as they come?

Artie: We just got back. We set up a tour around the Gainesville Fest. And we're going back out, probably the beginning of March. We're gonna go out to California and play with Hot Water. We'll see what else comes up. It'ls like right now we got this album that's coming out which we think is pretty special and we're hoping this one kinda catches on because the last one really didn't. But I don't really care because I'm not playing for this scene. I mean it's like...I'd like to and I'd like for the kids to get it but the just don't. You know, we're too..mainstream. I thought that we would fill the Quicksand void. I thought maybe kids miss Quicksand they might dig us, but maybe they just didn't miss Quicksand enough. I don't know. It's weird. With this record, I think we really put together...I said this was my "What's the Story Morning Glory," and uhm we already have another record written already and uh I think THAT'S my "Whats the Story Morning Glory." So we'll see.

Paul: You gonna record the new one in like a year or so?

Artie: Well we just recorded actually, we just got out of the studio. We're doing a split with Gameface on Revelation.

Paul: Yeah I heard you say that on stage.

Artie: The split has a cover song, 2 new songs and a couple extras.

Right here my tape recorder ate up the interview a little bit, and I can't make out the next minute or so of the conversation, so we'll skip ahead here with Artie talking a little more about the new songs. -G-
