Recently, I had a chance to sit down with my main man Artie Shepherd:
hero to many a Long Island hardcore kid, emo-superstar, and really
great guy to talk to. I decided I didn't want to do a typical interview,
because very honestly I am sick of hearing about Mind Over Matter
and World's Fastest Car. Furthermore, I knew that Artie had a wide
variety of sounds in his music collection. So, Artie and I talked about
music and what situations we like to listen to what music. The tape
recorder happened to be on.
What band-and if possible what album do you listen to when you're
really angry?
Fuck man, I listen to mellow music when I'm really pissed. Usually what gets
me the most mad is my girlfriend. She has the ability to really piss me off.
Let's see, l get in the car and I put on something that makes me forget about
why I'm so angry. I'd either listen to Emperor, the grindcore band from Norway,
if I was super crazy angry. Or I'd listen to Duncan Sheik. For some reason I'll be
in a fight and Duncan just start playing in my head. Lines like, take it easy on
me I'm feeling out of order.' It's a lot of love scenario lines that are really good.
Ned's Atomic Dust Bin's another one. Godfodder with the relationship
thing. I think that guy had every problem I'd ever had. In addition to Emperor,
maybe Morbid Angel or Mercyful Fate: something my girlfriend really hates.
Sick-ass grindcore.
...when you guys got signed to Some and you put out your first CD
with Errortype:11?
Steely Dan.
God, these weren't the answers I was expecting.
Well Steely Dan is feel good music. Either Steely Dan or Yes. l don't know,
stuff that I listen to 'cause there's something about it. From Steely Dan their
early Greatest Hits album, and Yes' Going for the One.
(I laugh then Artie Joins in) You've gotta understand, I never listen to hardcore.
(more laughter)
...when you're not fighting, but at peace with your girlfriend?
Ride, because it's something we kind of share together. Maybe
My Bloody Valentine.
Wow, there's a weird one for a girlfriend.
Yeah, but it's sex music.
Oh my God. (laughter)
Or Morissey or the Smiths, maybe Blur too. The Queen is Dead by the
Smiths is an album we love. Ride's Nowhere, or My Bloody Valentine's
Loveless. Blur's Modem Life is Rubbish 'cause it's both our
favorites. I thought it was a cool album for the band, it's when they started to
change a little bit. I think the songs are really well written and lt's just a great
record. Park Life is really cool too, but it's a little over the top sometimes.
They're equally as good in my game but Modern Life is better.
...driving?
Recently it's been Guided by Voices. It depends if I'm with someone or not,
though, 'cause you know how you put stuff in that's not going to piss every-
body off. When I'm by myself it's recently been T. Rex or Guided by Voices,
Oasis singles.
Shit, you have Blur and Oasis? Isn't that against the rules of Brit-pop?
No, you have to like more one than the other. I like Oasis better. Hey, it's all
good English songwriting. I think Blur is more Iike the Beatles, though,
because the Beatles were really versatile, and Oasis is really one dimensional.
