... in the shower?
I think Oasis again. I used to listen to music all the time in the shower
with this radio I had. Me and Artie Phillie (of Millhouse and Indecision)
used to live together and he was so funny because he used to sing in
the shower.
What did he sing?
He would sing Elvis Costello which was really funny 'cause he'd sing way
out of key. (laughter) It was so funny.
... when you used to do homework in college?
Well, that's the best time to listen to music, especially when writing papers.
I don't know, my tastes changed so much. Man, it's hard to think back that
far. A lot of Yes, and definitely Rush's Hemispheres is my favorite and
Show of Hands is great too. A lot of stuff they did in the early eighties that was
sort of Police-esque. They're a pretty cool band and a lot of people hate them,
but I think there was a period in my life where I think I listened to them for a year
straight with nothing else. They remind me a lot of Yes and Led Zepplin.
... at a cocktail party?
Well, my cocktail party would be miserable. Nick Drake, yes. Oh yeah, and
Frank Sinatra.
A must!
Yes, it's a rule, must have Frank Sinatra.
...when you're getting dressed in the morning?
lf everybody's up, yeah. A lot of my vinyl I listen to in the morning. Most recently
it was the Rolling Stones' Out of our Heads and some Steely Dan.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Black Sabbath's Greatest Hits. My sister liked it. I had one sister who
was into Yes and Pink Floyd and another who was into Black Sabbath. l saw
it and it was the one with the skeletons that are all alive. I was just taken by it.
...in the van with the band?
This one's easy: Foreigner's Greatest Hits, because it's funny. Michael Jackson's
Off the Wall. Ace Freely's solo stuff which our drummer is into. We listen to
a lot of really bad pop and rock records which are funny and fun to listen to. We can
never agree. Phil listened to the new Foo Fighters record over and over and over
again when we were on tour. Then Adam would listen to Sunny Day Real Estate,
and our drummer hates Sunny Day so he would get mad. Then I would put on
the Stones. It never worked, so our common-ground was to go to used record
shops and buy really cheesy tapes. Poison, shit like that.
...when you go to a live show?
The best show I've ever been to was Oasis at Maxwell's in NYC
and Oasis at Wetlands. Just because it was so small and there was
this incredible feeling that this band is going to be huge. They were
so cool and at Wetlands they did 'Rock and Roll Star' twice which I
thought was so cool! They have absolutely no stage presence
which was the coolest part about it. That's why they're better in a
small place. Quicksand too. They were phenomenal when they
would play live. Maybe some day we'll get to see them again. I
haven't seen anything in a long time that's really really impressed
me. Silent Majority is great, and Milhouse 'cause you never know
what Artie is going to say and it's funny. I can't say I would see a lot
of the bands I once liked to see live again. Like I probably wouldn't
go to see Oasis if they came to NYC now. Who's your favorite?
I would drive anywhere to see anything by Blake
Schwarzenbach or lan Macaye.
I would love to see a Roarschach again, they were amazing live. Born
Against put on a great show, but neither of those two bands were very big
when they were around.
